Small Farm Articles

Your friends at Indian Chimney Farm are writing a series of informal articles on sustainable agriculture and small farm life. Read, enjoy, and leave your comments!

We have dedicated our lives to learning the meaning of sustainable agriculture, and turning this knowledge into practice on our Finger Lakes farm, just outside of Ithaca, New York.

One definition of sustainable agriculture is:
"Sustainable agriculture is a model of social and economic organization based on an equitable and participatory vision of development which recognizes the environment and natural resources as the foundation of economic activity. Agriculture is sustainable when it is ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just, culturally appropriate and based on a holistic scientific approach."
- NGO Sustainable Agriculture Treaty

We don't know the perfect livestock, crop, business model, or agriculture enterprise which can accomplish this noble goal, but we are experimenting to find a mix of products, services, animals, and plants to see if we can solve this challenging problem.

Feel free to browse our articles, check out recommended books, and leave your comments and feedback on what you read so all can learn from you!
